Jack the Ripper – A Love Story ( Excerpt 185 )
I tried to put these thoughts to the back of my mind, but they kept returning. Then to my surprise I had a unexpected visitor, one that gave me more cause for concern.
The visitor, Major, now Colonel Goodhew of The Royal Army Medical Corps with an offer for me. ‘Because of the sterling work that you performed in South Africa, if you are interested and I hope you will be. I am authorised by my masters at the War Office to offer you the rank of Major, to be in charge of a field hospital.’ he stated.
‘So, there is to be a war? I had hoped it was just tabloid rumours.’ I said. ‘I’m afraid that there will be a war, such as never been seen before. It will involve most of the Major countries and It has been forecast hostilities on several continents. There will be fighting on land, at sea and surprisingly, or so I have been informed, in the air. It would appear that several countries, including our own has a fledgling Air Force.
‘In that, you have certainly surprised me, Flying machines used in a war?’ I said. ‘This will be total war, not only will aircraft be used, but possibly also chemical weapons, we have intelligence that suggests our enemies have them and will use them. this is why I need forward thinking Doctors like yourself to give aid to our forces, and those of our allies too.’ His words sounded like something out of a Jules Verne novel.
