Jack The Ripper – A Love Story ( Excerpt 63 )
‘You could be right, I honestly don’t know, killing I can understand but why not just kill? Why does he feel the need to butcher them after death?’ Implored Abberline. ‘Maybe he feels the need to destroy their femininity, it is after all their sexual organs he is destroying, but I agree with you, he appears to be an educated man what does he gain by it, I admit, it escapes me too. He has to be a thinking being, what in hells name can he be thinking!’ I stated.
‘Well!, I’m with you on that one Doctor, what is he thinking? agreed the Inspector. ‘Perhaps, when you apprehend him, that’s the first thing you should ask, Why? ‘ I stated. ‘ I’d be delighted too, but I can’t even begin to think what the answer might be, probably something totally irrelevant, he’s clever but I do believe he’s insane,’ was his reply.
‘Insane, why do you think that?’ I had never considered myself insane. ‘Come on!’ said the Inspector, ‘You are a sane man, would you? or maybe more to the point, could you kill in this fashion?’ As I explained Abberline is no fool, had he contrived to get me in this position, or was I overthinking, I had to be very cautious how I answered.
‘I, in all honesty, could not imagine myself both killing a woman and mutilating her in this fashion, does that satisfy your curiosity,’ was my somewhat annoyed answer. ‘There is no need to get annoyed Doctor, it was merely a question, I do not suspect you of anything … At the moment,’ and then his face lit up in the most annoying fashion, he was grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cat, ‘Almost had you going then, Doctor,?’ I joined in with his laughter, I was at a loss, it just seemed the right thing to do.
